Firsts win in a Ten-Goal Thriller
St.Matthews 4 – 6 Carryduff Colts
On a sunny day at Ashfield School Carryduff Colts delayed St Matthews impending promotion to 2B by at least one week.
St Matthews took the lead after being frustrated for the first 15 minutes but The Colts showed resilience after a mistake by St Matts keeper and Sherry took the ball off him to equalise 1-1.
Again St Matts took the lead in pursuit of 2nd place and automatic promotion, 2-1, but this vibrant youthful Colts team regrouped and equalised again from a goal keeping error and again Sherry pounced for a deserved equaliser 2-2.
St Matts being the team they are took the lead again from a shot from distance which should have been closed down but wasn’t and that was half time 3-2.
The Colts came out in the second half with renewed vigour and within ten minutes had equalised once again with MOTM Sherry involved again only this time the provider for young Rafferty making only his second start for The First team but got in to nod the ball home 3-3.
From a super free kick from another lad making only his second first team appearance big Simon Turkington found the skipper Mc Donnell who headed the ball into the net and The Colts took the lead for the first time in the game 3-4.
The Colts were not done yet and again more impressive work from Sherry combined again with Rafferty and the 18 year old scored with a tap in with scenes of joy from his fellow players and the coaching staff, what a start to his Colts career 3-5.
That was never going to be the end of the scoring as St Matts had to do their level best to get back into this game and they did when they scored a fourth from a cross on the right and a simple tap in by Burns who came on as a second half substitution 4-5.
Squeaky bum time for the Colts but it was that man Sherry who sealed the deal and the 3 points for the Colts when he scored his third for a deserved hattrick 4-6 and a great victory for Carryduff Colts.
A special mention also goes out to another lad making is first team debut Conor Coyle who had a great game in centre midfield and proves that if you impress for the 2nds you will get your in the Firsts.
Well Done Lads !!! #UpaColts
