The two local rivals turned on a very crisp and freezing cold evening in the local Premier League clash.
The Colts started well with neat passing and had the vast majority of the ball, and after 15 minutes Ryan Tweedy cut in from the right and unleashed a fierce shot from just inside the box, and again Aquinas keeper did really well to get a strong hand to the shot, great save. The Colts kept pushing and after a series of great corners, Michael Lawson who was playing up top latched on to one of Simon Turkington’s pin point corners to smash the ball into the roof of the net with a sweet left foot strike, 1:0 to the Colts with 25 minutes gone.
The goal settled the Colts, and again they had the majority of the game with Jonny Wilson playing in midfield braking up the play and Rory Reilly stroking the ball around. Donal Healy seen lots of the ball out wide on the left, and had loads of great runs into the box, and yet again the Aquinas keeper kept the score at 1:0. With about 5 minutes left in the first half Peter Duncan played a long ball which Michael Lawson latched on too and in one movement he controlled the ball and smashed a shot which cannoned off the post, and Ryan Tweedy cut in from the right skipping past one defender to curl the ball with his left foot into the far corner of the goal, 2:0 to the Colts.
The 2nd half played out much the same as the 1st, but the Colts couldn’t add to their tally, although great runs from Leo McGowan could have added a couple more, Eoin Maguire was called into action with a few well placed corners, but he plucked them out of the air with real confidence. Aquinas pushed hard for a goal, but David Hilland snuffed out any real attack with timely tackles and strong headers.
The game finished 2:0 to the Colts who move up to joint 3rd with 3 games in hand over most teams, so with a bit of decent weather over the coming weeks and the lads could see them within a point of top place in the Premier League.
