Carryduff got off to a very quick start in this cup game against Aquinas.
The Colts were 2 inside 5 mins and 3 up inside 10. The fist goal was scored by Cain McDonnell when he followed in smartly after the keeper fumbled an innoxious shot. The second was scored by Euan Neeson when a perfect floated corner by Rory Thompson was well converted at the near post. Euan Neeson also scored the third goal when a well struck shot from outside the box soared into the top of the net leaving the Aquinas keeper no chance.
At this point the Colts were well on top and only for some “dubious” referring decisions this game could have been well over by half time. Half time score 3 nil to the Colts.
The second half was a more balanced match but superb marshalling by the Colts defence ensured the Aquinas attack was kept to only a number of shots. With Aquinas pushing to get a goal to get them back in the game the Colts were able to attack on the break. Decisive passing from the defence through the midfield provided a number of opportunities but it wasn’t until the sixtieth minute when another high shot this time from Rory Thompson effective finished the game off.
The 5 and final goal was scored by Eoin Haigney when “a rasping shot from all of 20 yards” left their keeper no chance. There were a number of fine performances across the park, Frank McWilliams and Matthew Clayton were solid in defence, Euan Neeson and Nathan McCarthy created a number of good chances while Cain McDonnell was always a danger up front.
