This game was played on a pitch which only just passed inspection. It was always going to be a battle with the team that made the least mistakes coming out on top.
Despite the conditions the Colts produced a lot of good football in the opening stages with slick passing through the centre. Mark and Eoin Haigney opened up the Larne defence but unfortunately we didn’t make the most of our chances.
Larne went ahead after about 20 minutes when indecision in the middle of the park allowed the Larne midfielder to go through had let in the centre forward who took his goal well. The Colts continued to fight on and some strong defence play by Frank and Leo ensured Larne attack was mostly kept at bay. With a minute to go before the half Larne scored a second – half time score 2 nil to Larne.
The Colts started the second half strongly and although playing against a strong wind had most of the opening chances. Rory got the Colts back in the game when a well struck shot beat the keeper at the near post. The Colts were well in contention and the introduction of Eoin McGleenon and Ben Tweedy made sure Larne had limited chances.
With the Colts pushing for the equaliser Larne scored a third, on the breakaway, when a well stuck shot from outside the box gave James no chance. The Colts continued to battle on strongly to the of the game – another good fighting display were we just came up short.
