This match was the reset game following the bizarre last minute abandonment in Oct. the Colts knew a point would confirm their runners-up spot for a second season in a row in the Premier League, even though they took 4 points off the eventual winners Newhill! and only lost 2 games all season in the premier league! Football is a funny old game!
Anyway, the game started at a high pace, and it was Holywood who had the first shot on goal which brought a fantastic full stretch one handed save from Colts keeper Eoin Maguire. This sparked the Colts into playing some excellent football, and following a series of free kicks to the Colts Rory Reilly delivered the perfect free kick into the box which Michael Lawson met with a powerful header into Hollywood’s net, 1:0 to the Colts. The Colts bossed the game and it wasn’t long before they went two up, yet another series of free kicks resulted in Rory Reilly placing the ball 25 yards out and without much back lift at all Rory curled the ball over the wall and into the corner of the net, the Holywood keeper didn’t even move! The half ended 2:0 with the Colts on top.
The 2nd half stared in the same vein as the first with the Colts playing some excellent football and completely controlling the game, and from one of their training ground corners Simon Turkington delivered an excellent cross right into the 6 yard box, and as the Holywood defence struggled to clear one of their defenders diverted a Caolan Cunningham effort into his own net, 3:0 to the Colts. Holywood continued to press and they forced another great saves from Eoin Maguire in nets, one from a free kick which was destined for the top corner but at full stretch Eoin plucked the ball out of the air just under the bar. With about 15 minutes to go Holywood were awarded a soft penalty, but that man Maguire in nets was on top form to save with his feet!
The Colts continued to press and had several more great opportunities to really put the game to bed, but they failed to capitalise on their dominance. Holywood pulled one back with a decent cross and goal but the Colts never looked in any danger of losing this one, but nonetheless it was now 3:1. Within minutes of conceding Ryan Tweedy picked up the ball in his own half, and off he went on one of his mazy runs, and from 30 yards unleashed what can only be described as a worldie!! When the ball left his right foot it looked to flying over the bar, but it sweated and dipped into the Holywood net, thou got to feel for the Holywood keeper who changed his position 3 or 4 times as the ball moved in the air, what a strike and now 4:1 to the Colts.
As time was running out Holywood were awarded another soft penalty, and thus time Eoin couldn’t do anything about, 4:2 to the Colts.
The game ended 4:2 and confirms 2nd place for the Colts in The Premier League, a really fantastic effort considering they’ve only lost two games and taken 4 points off the winners Newhill.
